At 47, Chip Conley had it all—a hotel empire, success, and status. Then he died. Nine times in 90 minutes. What he discovered changed everything. Now he's built the world's first "midlife wisdom school," teaching thousands that our middle years aren't a crisis but a chrysalis. Is the longest phase of life (~35-75) actually its most misunderstood? Can friendship become medicine? Is striving actually keeping you from thriving? Discover why those who navigate midlife's unraveling emerge with something infinitely more valuable than achievement—genuine wisdom. Now available on all the podcast platforms, including YouTube. Start listening. Episode 905. Note: Chip and I invite you to experience these insights in person in Los Angeles on June 5th for a special gathering with the MEA faculty. The key, I think, to having a great second half of your life is to actually shift out of the fixed mindset of, I've got to prove myself and I've got to go and do things I do well, to the growth mindset of, I'm here to improve myself. The definition of success is learning. And so one of my favorite cocktail party questions I ask when I meet people for the first time is, so what in your life are you a beginner at these days? And a lot of people go running for the bar or for the bathroom because it's sort of a weird question. It's a pretty important one because if we only play games that we can win, our sandbox, proverbial sandbox, gets smaller and smaller and we get bored with life. And there are a lot of people we know who are our age who are bored with life, but it's partly because they're not willing to become a beginner again.
