My mom used to work with people who had Alzheimer's, and she would always tell me that the key to interacting with someone who has Alzheimer's is to just entertain all of the grand ideas and plans that they have. Like, for instance, a woman says, oh, you know what? I think tomorrow I'm gonna go drive to North Carolina, and I'm gonna visit my best friend, Jen. She can't drive, and Jen died a decade ago. That doesn't matter. You just have to say, oh, you know what? That sounds great. Tell me about Jen. What will you guys do in North Carolina? I found that this translates incredibly well to dating a man with ADHD. My sweet ADHD boyfriend will call me up, and he'll say, Lila, I figured it out. I know what I'm gonna do. I'm opening a leatherworking business. Now, people who are not equipped with the tools that I have might say, why are you doing this? How are you gonna do this? You are actively in a full-time career. But I, with the knowledge of Alzheimer's, say, baby, that sounds like a great idea. Tell me about it. What are you gonna make? Oh, I love it. Because the next day, he's just gonna say, Lila, when we get married, we gotta buy a saw. Why? Why do we need to buy a saw? Because I'm gonna have a woodworking studio. If you have an ADHD boyfriend, don't shut down their grand ideas. Entertain them. Because to be loved is to be seen.
