The next decade isn’t about sticking to old paths; it’s about agency and learning how to leverage AI to expand your potential. Here’s my strategy: I use an AI Integration Framework to map my expertise in three layers: 1. Core Expertise: The areas I’ve mastered 100%. 2. Secondary Knowledge: Areas where AI can elevate me to the top 1%. 3. Extensions: Skills I’m 40-60% confident in, but where AI can take me to the next level. This approach transforms a traditional T-shaped skillset into a multi-T-shaped career, with depth in multiple areas and the breadth to navigate new challenges. The risk? Staying stuck in outdated mindsets. The opportunity? Building an adaptable career where AI amplifies your unique talents. So I've been doing 2025 reflections. I would say this is the single biggest mistake that people are setting themselves up to make with their careers in 2025. Fundamentally, you need to stop thinking of yourself as I am me and I am in my job family or I have this experience and this is how I'm developing my experience further in 2025 and so on. That has worked for a long time. Instead, ask yourself, how much agency do I have? How high is my bias to own my career? How much am I willing to put in on my side to learn aggressively about AI? And then divide the things you know and don't know into sort of concentric circles. Ask yourself, what do I know really well? What is the core of my expertise? What do I know pretty well and AI can make me like a 1% really good player? And then where can I spread my wings really far? Where I would normally say I'm 40, 50, 60% good, I'm not great, but with AI, I can be really good and I can be a stronger player overall. It's like when you have this traditional idea of a T-shaped professional where they are deep in one area and then wide. With AI, you can maintain that depth, but it's like multiple T's. You can have depth across different fields. You can extend that arm of that T really wide like TikTok isn't letting me show you how long my arms are. I have very long arms. That's what it's like. And so the biggest mistake that people make is they think my job family is where I am instead of thinking my ability to collaborate and learn with AI is what is going to define my next 10 years.
