GitHub just launched its own MCP server this week, and I'm gonna show you how to set it up in Cursor. First, you wanna go to your Cursor's setting page and click Add New Global MCP Server to edit the mcp.json. Then add this chunk of code into your JSON file. You'll notice that you'll need to provide a GitHub personal access token. If you don't already have one, let's generate one. So go to your GitHub account and click on Profile, Settings, Developer Settings, and then Personal Access Token. Name your token and then toggle the permissions to your liking. I just gave my token all the permissions. Once you hit Generate, you can copy paste your token into that mcp.json file, and then your GitHub MCP server should now be enabled. Now your AI agents can do stuff like create a branch, create a new issue, and even update and create a file.
