ChatGPT 5 feels like it’s the holy grail at thi...
We finally have official news on chat GPT-5. So Sam Altman shared a tweet, this is how official news happens now, and he said two really important things. The first is that GPT-5 will be everything in one box, and I'll explain what that means. The second piece of news is that GPT-4.5 is what was known internally and leaked all over the internet as Project Orion. If you are on the inside and are a nerd with too much time on their hands, you probably remember Sam tweeting a picture of the stars, specifically the Orion constellation, and saying the stars are beautiful and they will rise this winter. Everyone interpreted that as saying the Orion project will launch. I know this is what we do. We're nerds. And at the end of the day, we were right. All the nerds were right. It is going to launch. It's going to launch probably in the next month or so here. There's a good chance it will launch before the end of meteorological winter, and that will be apparently the last model that OpenAI launches before GPT-5, and that matters because that means O3 is not going to launch. Yeah, O3. All the hype about O3. Remember, you know, 12 days of OpenAI. O3, the last day. It's like having your present snatched away at Christmas time. Bye-bye, O3. And that is because Sam has gotten so much feedback from all of us that the model naming is insanely confusing that he is putting everything to the side to fix it. And so GPT-5 will have O3 under the hood, inside it, but it'll have everything else too. It will have deep research in there. Apparently it will have operator in there. It will have short reasoning. It will have long reasoning. It will have no reasoning. You name it, it's going to come out of the GPT-5 box. I think some wit on Twitter said GPT-5 was the friends we made along the way. I can't take credit for that one, but I do love it. And I think it kind of makes sense. I tease, but if I'm looking at my chat GPT right now, I see six models. Six. Like 4.0. 4.0 was scheduled tests. O1, O3 mini, O1 pro, etc. And then there's temporary chat, and then there's more models in a little drop-down, and then none of this has deep research in it. So it is very confusing. It is super confusing right now. I see why they're going after it. And what they want is basically no model drop-down. It's just GPT-5. This is the best we have. It wraps in everything, and it knows magically what you want, and it goes and does deep research when you want it, and it gives you a reasoned answer when you want it, and it gives you a short answer when you want it. And so we'll see how they do. But if they keep the cadence of releasing every two or three months, GPT-5 would be on track to come out this summer. I don't know that that's true. I don't have special inside information, but that would be inside the usual operating cadence we've seen from OpenAI. Regardless, it's the first time we've had really official confirmation on what Orion is, on when Orion is coming, and the first time we've had official confirmation on what the heck GPT-5 is, and what we're going to do with it. And it's also a big deal that they didn't mention O3, and O3 is out. Like, O3 is going to be wrapped inside. The intelligence is going to be wrapped inside GPT-5, but apparently there will never be a standalone O3 release. And that is also big news, because they made a big deal about it, and they're backtracking, which you can do. Like, founders change things, businesses change, but it's worth noticing. So that's the official news on chat GPT-5. And if you are wondering where can I learn more on this, I will probably write it up on Substack later today. I'm also going to be talking about it at my Maven live lesson, which is coming up in a couple weeks here, because the direction they're going is really important for product builders, and anyone who is thinking about building AI systems at all, inside your company, outside a company, if you do it for fun, you need to understand how these models are going to work. It's going to come up. We're going to do it at the Maven live. So we'll talk more there. Cheers.
