How to drain a water heater. Love, Dad
I'm gonna show you how to drain your water heater, pretty easy process. You need to do this once a year to get the gunk out of the bottom of your tank. Simply put, cold water comes in one side, shoves out the hot water the other side, and all that junk builds up at the bottom of your tank. If your hot water heater is electric, shut that breaker off first, very important. Then hook up a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Turn off the cold water supply line, and then find a faucet in your house, turn the hot water on, let it run until it stops. There's a relief valve that you need to open up, that'll help everything drain as well. Once you've got all that done, open the valve at the bottom of your tank, and it'll start draining out that hose really slowly. Takes about a half hour, but once it's all the way drained, open that water line all the way up, and let it flush the bottom of that tank out. Takes a little while to get all the junk out, but you gotta just keep trying. Now, if your hot water heater is located in the basement, you might need to drain everything into buckets, and haul those buckets out one at a time, a hassle I know. Also, if you're on natural gas, you're gonna wanna turn your valve down to just your pilot light being on. Once you've got everything drained, and you're happy with it, close that valve, remove that garden hose, and close your relief valve. Last thing you wanna do is turn your breaker back on, or turn your natural gas back up to where it should be setting-wise.
