If your 18-year-old is stalling out in college, here's how to get them unstuck and on a path they really love. As I talk about a lot in my book, The Degree-Free Way, young adults in the US are taught to pick work all wrong. And that's because high schools are trying to get them to buy college degrees. They're not thinking about what skills they actually need to learn and the best way for them to learn those skills. And often it's because high schools actually just don't know how many jobs are out there. There's between 3,000 and 6,000 unique job titles in our country, and we add about 300 to 500 unique job titles every single month. That's a lot of jobs and most kids don't know a fraction of what's out there. They're not taught what's possible or how to look through the overwhelming mountain of options. It leaves them with no clear why of what they're doing in college to begin with. This makes them understandably stall out and change their majors three to five times. You as a parent can help them figure out what they need and how to find it by going through their degree-free four. This is something that we do in the launch program so that we can help young adults find jobs that actually work for their needs and the type of life they wanna live. And you can do it at home too. Disclaimer, this does take a lot of time and effort, but I promise you it is well worth it. So the things that you're looking for are you need to figure out where they wanna live and do life, what sort of income they need to do that, what sort of schedule is gonna work for them, and then what sort of work environment they wanna be going into day in and day out. Some people really love a nine to five office setting. Some people wanna be able to go out to different locations and do their job during the day. Some people wanna be able to work from home or a hybrid schedule so they see people sometimes, but not all the time. Some people don't wanna be customer facing. So there's all these different needs that people have for work environment. And then schedule is a very obvious one that impacts your happiness. Some people are okay working five hours a day, seven days a week. Some people would rather work four day work weeks and some people would rather work shift work. There are all different types of schedules that are available. And if we pick correctly, then we're gonna be very happy with the resulting life and schedule that we have. Then income is one that obviously impacts somebody's happiness. If they're able to afford to do the things that they want, whatever those things are, they'll be much more satisfied with their work. And then the last thing is location. Does this job allow you to live and do life where you wanna live and do life? The important thing to do now is now that you have the degree free four, have your child prioritize these things in order of importance to them because everybody will have one key priority. Sometimes two are tied for first place, but it's really tough because you need to make sure that you don't have too many criteria because what we're building is a sort of filter so we can go out to the internet and use this filter to figure out what types of jobs will actually work for their life. So once we do that, then we're gonna take these degree free four and then the top priorities. We're gonna go out and look objectively at all the different types of jobs by searching jobs that make a certain amount of money, jobs that have a certain type of schedule, jobs that have a certain type of work environment, jobs that are in a certain location. And then when you see recurring job titles that interest your child, now we pull those job titles down. So you're gonna look at those job titles and then you're gonna look up those job listings nationally and locally and read the job descriptions. Once you do that, take a yellow legal pad, take a piece of paper and actually write down the different things that you see that fall into this criteria. You are looking for licenses, certifications, hardware, software, and then specific skills that there are mentioned. This is a strategic way to figure out what your child needs to learn to get these jobs. And then you can help them find educational options that help them to learn those things. And what we find in the launch program is those things are almost always faster, less expensive, more interesting, and higher quality educational options than a college degree. And the last thing is that you'll also find that your child will feel much more stewardship and initiative over learning something that they picked in the strategic way. So now that you've gone through this process, you're able to pick educational options that actually work for them and there's a clear why for them. You're gonna see amazing results from doing this. This may sound intimidating and it does take time and it does take effort, but I promise you it is so worth it because your child will get a unique plan that's specific to them. If you would rather have somebody do this for your child, then degreefree.com forward slash launch. You can grab a consultation. We'll jump on with your child, talk through what they actually need from their work. And then we help them find three specific jobs that work for them and three ways to learn every single one of those jobs.
