why decaf coffee goes in the orange pot ☕️ #his...
The inventor of decaf coffee was trying to salvage ruined beans. That inventor was a coffee merchant in early 1900s Germany named Ludwig Roselius. One of his shipments of raw, not yet roasted coffee beans got soaked by seawater in transit. Frustrated and just curious, Roselius roasted the coffee beans anyway. Even though they were green and wet and salty, the resulting coffee tasted regular, but lacked that usual caffeinated buzz. And there are now statues and busts of Roselius because he kept experimenting. And he invented decaffeinating coffee, because caffeine is a molecule, and it turns out you can wash or filter that off of young, raw coffee beans. And Roselius didn't do this for science, he was a businessman. He founds Café Og, the first brand of decaf coffee in the world. And Roselius's brand is still with us in one specific way, because other companies kinda took over decaf. But Café Og had amazing branding, the packaging and the ads all featured this awesome orange color. That led restaurants and diners to associate decaf itself with this orange color. And that brand is the secret reason your diner puts the decaf coffee in the pot with the orange top.
