The worst backswing position in golf is being short and across the line, and here's how we're going to fix it. There's nothing wrong with a short swing, but when that club is vertical, it usually wants to work very steep and out in front of you. This requires a lot of manipulation and early extension to make it shallow very quickly. But as you get that club more laid off, the weight of the club will get more behind you and it can shallow much more naturally. Two major issues I'll see is a cupped lead wrist. You can see that kicks the club across the line, but as that wrist flattens, the club points behind you. Another common one is a flared trail elbow. As that elbow starts to tuck in a little more, that club will again lay down much better. To work on this, get up against the wall and step about a foot away. If you stand that club up early, you can see that club head is nowhere near the wall behind you. Your goal is to try to get it to flatten back and behind. One thing you have to avoid, though, is standing up and out of your spinal posture to try to compensate for the poor arm movements. Stay in posture and get that club back to the wall by using the arms. Once you get the feel, go back to hitting balls at slower speeds. Follow for more golf tips.
