What flex index ski boots should you be in? It's a question that we get all the time, and the problem with that question is in order for there to be a specific answer, flex index and ski boots would have to be standardized. It's not. In front of me, I have five different 130 flex ski boots, and they all flex really pretty differently. So how do we assess what flex you should be in? And what we're really looking for as bootfitters is a boot that you can flex properly. And when you're in the ski boots, we're looking for your knee to get over your big toe. So you might be asking yourself, why are there so many flex index options out there? And the reason is simple. It's price points. It's just to hit a variety of price points so people can get into the sport. Regardless of that, definitely want to get into the stiffest boot that you can flex properly. Regardless of your ability, a ski boot's job is the same. Its job is to keep you in a ready athletic position, and stiffer boots do a more effective job at that than softer flexing boots. It's not just the force that you're putting into your boots when you're actually out there. You're encountering a variety of things. The slope of the hill changes. You go from dust on crust to powder to groom to perfect quarry. There's all these things trying to knock you off balance. And when you're more balanced, which is going to be easier for you to accomplish in a stiffer boot, you're going to be able to drive your skis better, feel more efficient, and be quite a bit more confident when you're out there.
