The great thing about drills is they help you FEEL a motion, instead of listening to someone tell you how to do it. This drill will help make it simple. You can do this on your living room carpet with an iron or a wood, making some half speed swings and skimming the ground. Make sure you don’t tilt your upper body to shallow, but instead drop your trail arm to your side, straighten your trail elbow, and slightly rotate (supinate) your trail forearm. If you don’t drop your arms and get the club more parallel to the ground you will not be able to clip the ball off of the tee. This drill fixed my over the top slice in five swings. The key to this drill is learning to shallow the club as you start the downswing, which simply put is just lowering your trail arm to your side while straightening your elbow and adding in a tiny bit of forearm rotation so the shaft flattens to almost parallel to the ground. If you come over the top and open up your shoulders too soon, you will not sweep the tee and you will hit the ground before the ball. Give this drill a try at home or at the range to simplify your downswing and hit longer straighter drives.
