Sorry not sorry. Should i dedicate my life to this?
I think I shot myself in the foot last night defending you. When I say you, I'm referring to young users of this platform. Subtle flex, but I have to explain this to make you understand the context of the story. I was invited to a dinner last night hosted by literal Silicon Valley royalty, executives, founders, and creators all in the media and AI space. So we sit down and everyone's talking about how new AI video models are going to make it so easy to make more content, that we're going to have more stuff on the internet, more on YouTube, more on TikTok. And someone next to me chimes in and jokes, yeah, more brain rot. And I don't know if it's because my work has had me interviewing a lot of Gen Z people recently or if it's because I'm halfway through the book, Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. But it was at this point in the conversation that I chimed in and said, actually, um, yeah, has anybody here talked to a teenager recently? And the room kind of went quiet. And I was like, yeah, the vocabulary that they use to describe the device that they hold in their pocket, the same one that you and I have, is completely different from the kinds of words that we use. Brain rot, doom scrolling, addiction. Someone across the table goes, yeah, they know something's off. And I go, they don't know, they can feel it. And what's more frustrating, and I actually did say this part, is I said, and then when they look to the adults in the room, which by the way, guys, that's us. We offer them no frameworks, no education, no tools, no new vocabulary to describe what it is that they're feeling. Instead, we're sitting around talking about how we can make cool new videos with Sora. It was about that point in the conversation where I realized I may have overstepped and I might not be getting invited to that room again. This is not just some passing interest for me. I think that this is quickly starting to turn into a hill that I am prepared to die on.
