My husband had Parkinson's and one of the things he did was box and it was very good for balance and to deal with the stiffness of the disease. Then I heard that people with Parkinson's were rock climbing and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. So off we went to watch people who have tremors climb these giant walls in a gym and then go outside and climb cliffs. No one knows how they can do that because some of them have what's called dyskinesia where they have jerky motions all the time. Some are wheeled up to the wall that they rock climb in wheelchairs. They get on that slope. These hills go straight up like that. Some are still tremoring but some of them stop tremoring while they're climbing. Nobody knows how they can do that but they do and they feel so filled with accomplishment and joy. That was so good. Good job. Thank you. The sense that they can climb a mountain when usually in their lives there's so many things they can no longer do. It's a group that climbs together four times a week usually and they support each other and they cheer for each other but they also end up walking better. If they go every other day then the stiffness subsides, balance is improved. There's nothing people with Parkinson's can take to slow the progression of the disease. There are things, there are medications that people take to deal with the symptoms. The rock climbing is also just to deal with the symptoms but it's quality of life and it does make a difference. You get emotional. It's nice to be good at something.
