It's really hard to stand out as a founder. So here's one potential strategy that you can use. Most founders approach VCs with a pitch deck, and that's great, that's what you should do. But one in every 100 founders will take an extra step and include an investment memo alongside their pitch deck. You heard that right, one in 100. So that memo could be what sets you apart. Now let's back up. An investment memo is a document, usually around 10 pages long, that investors write up to discuss internally about a startup that they're considering investing in. It usually includes information about the team, the market, the competition, the product, financials, and any key open questions or risks. The goal of the memo is to align the entire investment team around an opportunity and help guide their decision on whether to invest. Since every investment firm uses memos to evaluate deals, when a founder provides one upfront, they're making this process as easy as possible by providing a ready-made starting point. It also shows thoughtfulness, preparation, and gives a lot more detail than just a pitch deck. To be clear, you do not have to do this. It's far from standard practice.
