Three prescription drugs that increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, part two. My name is Robert Love. I'm a neuroscientist, and I specialize in helping people prevent Alzheimer's disease with science. I'm here with Dr. Josh Hellman, a medical doctor trained at Harvard. We made a viral video about three drugs that increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. So, Dr. Josh, what are these three drugs that increase the risk of dementia? Yeah, so the first one are anticholinergics, like antihistamines, specifically Benadryl is a common one that, unfortunately, is linked to higher amounts of dementia. And what's the number two drug on your list? Number two are statins, like lovastatin. Why are statins so bad? A lot of people are prescribed statins to help lower cholesterol. How do statins increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease? Yeah, so one way is statins have been associated with increased risk of diabetes, and statins also poison mitochondria. So statins impair mitochondrial health, and that can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. What about someone who's prescribed statins to lower cholesterol? So they have high cholesterol, their doctor says they have high cholesterol. What would you recommend? Not giving medical advice, but what would you recommend someone do if they're prescribed some of these drugs? So what I would do is I would go back to your doctor and say, I'm looking for some other strategies and talk about diet, decreasing the amount of cholesterol in your diet. Number two is exercise, and number three, there are other prescription drugs that will lower cholesterol, like cholestyramine.
