When you have chronic internalized shame, everything about your life will feel overly personalized and everything will feel existential. And this is because shame is different than all other emotions. It hits us at the level of our identity, meaning that shame is I am bad versus something like guilt or embarrassment is I did something bad. And shame makes everything feel existential because every single interaction that you have will be flavored with this undertone of survival in your nervous system where you are over-personalizing any challenge, anything that could go wrong, any person's tone of voice is now because you are you, that is why this is happening. And this makes everything feel extremely existential because now every single micro-interaction that you have is you having to pay such hyper-vigilant attention to what is going on around you to make sure that you are able to recognize where you do belong and therefore you have survival or where you don't belong and therefore you don't have survival. So there's no lightness, there's no freedom, there is no just existing in your body.
