when I was in my last corporate job there was a clause in my contract that said I was expected to work 40 hours a week but where required I could go over and I wouldn't be compensated extra. that was just due to the company demands and sometimes you got to work more than what you're contracted. there were countless times where I would feel really awkward leaving the office at 530 which is when I was allowed to leave because I felt like everyone else was staying later because there was this expectation that everything was always urgent like we had to get everything done that day and the more and more I think about it these seven and a half years that I spent in corporate not once can I think to something that was actually an emergency or urgent that had to get done on that day and the thing that really got me is when people on my team would say well we're a family we stick together we have to do this together and just because someone was inefficient throughout their day and did not get their work done by the time you want to leave then using this idea of where a family were in this together we have to stay together and support each other until the work is done even when it's not your work I'm kind of like that's a major red flag all of this is to say if you are a salaried employee and you do not get overtime for working more than your contracted hours and you finish your work go home it's not an emergency you can wait till tomorrow
