What is this weird drill with the trail foot back that a lot of my students are practicing? Let me explain. 95% of golfers have a serious case of the early extension, where the butt comes off the original butt line and the pelvis lunges towards the ball causing all sorts of problems. This trail foot back drill prevents the trail leg and pelvis lunging towards the ball during the downswing slash impact, helping the hips to rotate and the lead leg to extend better which is a trait all good ball strikers have. First practice with your hands on your chest then have your right foot back around 10 inches. Make some turns back and through really trying to get your lead hip back and around whilst extending your lead leg. If done correctly, you will finish with most of the weight on your lead heel. If you feel like you're finishing towards the toes, we haven't got our lead hip back and around enough in the follow through. Watch these world class ball strikers all finish on their lead heel. Once you can feel your lead hip rotating back and around and finishing on your lead heel, add a club and swing through feeling the exact same pelvis and leg motion finishing on the lead heel. The final stage is hitting some balls with the trail foot back, executing the lead hip going back and around, lead leg extending and finishing on your lead heel. Master this right foot back drill to go from this to this.
