Why don't you look me in the eyes when I talk? It's hard for me to process and respond to you when I make eye contact. Okay, but eye contact is a respect thing, so can you just try harder? Imagine trying to have a conversation while juggling. So each ball represents something that your brain is processing. So one ball is for listening and processing what you're saying, another is for thinking of a response, and the third is for making eye contact. For someone without ADHD, keeping all of these balls in the air might feel natural, but with ADHD, it's like trying to juggle when the balls are different sizes or new ones are popping out of nowhere. Focusing on eye contact can feel like adding an extra super difficult ball to the mix. So sometimes it's easier to set aside the eye contact ball to be able to juggle the other ones effectively, aka making sure that you can listen and respond more effectively. So instead of naturally being able to juggle without really thinking about it, you have to consciously think of each component of the conversation as it's happening? Yes. And that's why sometimes you prioritize processing and responding in a conversation over eye contact? Exactly. Also, I find eye contact extremely uncomfortable if that's another conversation.
