We may end up seeing a resurgence of companies building out their own development teams and developing proprietary software, and it's all Salesforce's fault. Subscriptions brought us free and fast delivery, an affordable way to wear designer clothing, and cheap razor blades. But today, there's this new category of subscriptions, where we're paying to keep using something that we already own. How did we get here? Well, it all started with Salesforce. And since Salesforce started this whole thing, we've seen this, like, nasty little subscriptionification of almost everything in our lives. In the video that I just played, I wasn't able to stitch it, but they break down the average cost per individual consumer on subscriptions and kind of how it's built over time. But the problem is even worse at, like, an enterprise software level than it is within our own personal lives. And at a certain point, I think consumers are going to start to push back on the actual value that they're getting from this constant subscription, as opposed to being able to purchase something and run with it. The ability to be on the latest, greatest, newest version of software was always kind of the selling point of why to get a SaaS solution or a subscription over the top of buying on-premise tools. But now companies aren't even allowed to buy the software and host in their own environment in most cases. Which leads me to that prediction that if this continues and we continue to see this clip of increasing software subscriptions, at a certain point, aren't companies going to start to say enough is enough? With the cost of all of these subscriptions adding up, maybe having FTEs on site to develop their own proprietary software might be a winning option again. Now, I still feel like there is a benefit to the buy versus build mentality in most cases. But at a certain point, as these things continue to stack up, are we going to come back to that decision point of buy versus build that I feel like we just got over? Anyway, next time you're frustrated that you have to pay all of these subscription fees, just go ahead and blame it on Salesforce.
