That is toxic chlorine gas generated by the decomposition of trichloro-isocyanuric acid. TCCA for short is a disinfectant commonly used in pools because when it's fully dissolved in water it slowly decomposes into hypochlorous acid aka bleach as well as cyanuronic acid. But when it's only partially dissolved that's when you run into issues like what happened here. When it comes in contact with a small amount of water it still decomposes but into something more dangerous. It breaks down into pure chlorine gas as well as nitrogen trichloride which is extremely explosive. And so BioLab's faulty sprinkler system is what triggered this fire. And this is not the first time this has happened with this company. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board previously investigated an incident that happened with this company back in 2020. This same compound was released into the environment after their Louisiana location was partially damaged by a category 4 Hurricane Laura in 2020. And a similar incident happened in 2017 from flood damage from a different hurricane Hurricane Harvey. So if you are in the current affected area please be aware of these symptoms. My mom who lives near Congress is currently experiencing chest pain as a result of the chlorine exposure. And the best course of action is to move to a well-ventilated area and get some fresh air. And considering BioLab's a repeat offender for incidences like this it might be time for a class action lawsuit in my opinion because the compound in question TCCA is not currently covered under OSHA guidelines. Either that needs to be changed or charges need to be brought against this company.
