This is really important to me and to the culture of our classroom. I heard somebody say that something that I did wasn't fair. Somebody got something that somebody else did and it wasn't fair. Do you guys know what fair means with a quiet hand? Benji, what do you think fair means? Equal? Jack, do me a favor. Come stand up here. Do you see that yardstick on the top of the whiteboard? Can you grab it? Jack, thank you. Jack was able to grab it. He had to work a little bit hard, but he was able to grab it. Alex, come here. Do you see that? Can you get it? Alex, you can't get it, right? What does Alex need? How can we help Alex with a quiet hand? Almost everybody's hand is out. Everybody has ideas on how to help. Shahan, what can we do? We can give him a stool. Alex, now you have a chair. Can you get it now? Stand on the chair, dude. But wait a second. That wasn't fair. We gave Alex a chair and we didn't give Jack a chair. That's not okay. Benji gave a really good example of fair, but it's actually wrong. It's a beautiful mistake. I love it, but that's not what fair is. Jack is way taller. He didn't need the chair. Not all of you are going to need the same things. Some things are going to be really easy for some of you. Some things are going to be really hard for some of you. So you might look around and think, Hey, that's not fair. I didn't get extra time. Or I had to do this, and they only get to do that. But I want you to stop and think about what you need versus what that other classmate might need. Fair doesn't mean everyone gets the same thing. Your experience isn't the experience.
