So I found this thing through Reddit called the Autistic Translator, and I'll put up a screenshot. This is what it looks like, and there's the link where you can find it. And it's from a Reddit user that basically put up a post about them getting fired, unfortunately. And because of reasons surrounding it, they created this Autistic Translator because of the miscommunication with their manager at HR. And I put in some of the simplest things to just test it out, and this is a godsend. I didn't realize how incredibly literal I actually can be. I met this new person a while ago, just as an example, and she wrote in multiple of her messages before we were about to meet up that she was pumped to see me, which I take as a lot of excitement, because pumped is like a very, like, oh, I'm so excited. I put it in the Autistic Translator, you know what it said? So the autistic person's interpretation, this person is extremely excited to see me and is likely expecting a high energy or enthusiastic response in return. I mean, true, that's sort of how I took it. The neurotypical's interpretation is, I'm very happy to see you. The phrase is generally used as an enthusiastic greeting conveying warmth and excitement, but not necessarily expecting the same level of energy and response. And then there's a part that says bridging the gap, and I'll just put up a screenshot, I guess. The miscommunication here could stem from the difference in how expressions of enthusiasm are interpreted. The autistic person hearing I'm pumped to see you might feel like there's an expectation to reciprocate similar enthusiasm, which can be overwhelming, which, yeah, true. And it says that the neurotypical person is simply expressing their happiness in an exaggerated way to convey a positive emotion. It doesn't mean that they're actually that excited, they just want to show a positive emotion. Why not just say I look forward to seeing you? That's a positive emotion, why does it have to be so exaggerated when that makes it come across in a completely different way? Anyway, I'm rethinking all of my social interactions from the past, I guess all my life.
