So often viewers will catch my slip back into u...
Like a lot of evangelical Christian women, I was groomed to use what's being called the Fundy Baby Voice. This is me as a trad wife and fundamentalist. I tell that story and how I escaped in my upcoming memoir, A Well-Trained Wife. The voice goes by several names in evangelism. Childlike, primary voice, gentle spirit, and keep sweet. It's a suppression tactic that robs women of their natural sound and healthy emotional range. And recovery involves years of retraining and self-discovery. Sometimes even now, 15 years later and after all that therapeutic work, I still slip when I'm fawning. That's because fawning is a trauma response. And the voice can also point to S.A. in your past. That childlike voice will truncate at the age that you were first violated. But sounding sweet is rewarded in high control religion. The most successful church girls will keep sweet well. Sometimes I use the voice on purpose, like when I want you to understand how my mentors trained me and how they sounded. The voice is used to coax your buy-in. They want your cooperation. This makes it really useful in politics and religion. Both systems have an agenda they want to persuade you into. The most toxic is when politics and religion mix. Now you have victims victimizing others using the voice. Truth and facts are irrelevant. The voice preys on your emotions. Healing meant learning to tell the truth in plain language. Let the facts speak for themselves. It's not my job to persuade anyone. I don't need to fawn to soothe potential volatility or violence.
