View OriginalThe fear of being seen is creative masturbation because you create the work, but you're scared to show the work. And this is because you're stuck in a dichotomy between one, your massive desire to be loved, to be accepted, to get the applause of strangers about your work, versus that you're not good enough. You're terrified of the rejection of the audience. Now, there's two ways to overcome this, which I'm going to explain to you. I spent 28 years as an artist manager helping artists go from zero to having hit records. And I do the same in the creative economy for the last five years, helping them build audiences. So the two ways to overcome creative masturbation or the fear of being seen is, one, is to have a purpose that is greater than yourself. If you are doing it just for yourself, it becomes very self-centered, and that's when your inner critic comes in and it tells you you're not good enough, and da, da, da, da. If you have a purpose that supersedes this, and what you do there is you have a problem, either something from the past or something currently, you solve the problem, and then you help the younger version of yourself solve that problem too, and that is authentic. And this is what you do to create a purpose, and this gives you greater inner strength because it feels like you're on a mission. That's what it is, it's a mission, okay? Number two is authenticity. You are a perfectionist, hence the fear of being seen, and the perfectionists outbase their self-worth on what other people think. Now, that means you're compromising your creativity or compromising your ideas or compromising your business in order to try and please other people, and that means it's inauthentic. So that means you're rejecting yourself. So in order to flip that, you have to do what you love. So what is the creativity you love? What is the business idea you love? Scratch your own itch and then find other people who agree with you, and this is how to be because you can't be
authentic and a people pleaser simultaneously. And if you can't be a people pleaser, then you can't be a perfectionist because the only perfectionist is yourself, and that's about inner mastery as opposed to outwardly people pleasing or perfection. So these are the two ways to overcome the fear of being seen. It's not easy, but it's definitely doable. You have to keep working at it. So I hope this helps. Peace out.
Summary
Multi-passionate creators often struggle with the fear of being seen, which hinders their potential. This fear stems from a desire for acceptance versus feelings of inadequacy. To overcome this, one should cultivate a purpose greater than oneself and embrace authenticity by focusing on personal passions rather than seeking external validation. Balancing inner mastery with creativity can help mitigate perfectionism and foster genuine self-expression.
