When someone asks you what you do for a living, you tell them what you do, right? Wrong. People aren't interested in what you do. They're interested in what you can do for them. But because you still need to answer the question, instead of barreling right into what you do, set up a problem that you help others to solve. And speaking of problems, if you have communication and speaking problems to solve yourself, be sure to follow. By starting with a problem they or someone they know cares about solving, you're at least getting them invested in hearing about what you do. This leads us to those seven words. You know how hard it is to. Know how hard it is to quit smoking, lose weight, build momentum as a startup. Whatever it is, it automatically gets your listener more invested in your stuff than otherwise would have happened.
Summary
Start your elevator pitch by addressing a problem that your audience cares about, rather than just stating what you do. Use the phrase "You know how hard it is to..." to engage listeners and make them more invested in your message.
