This 17-year-old high school golfer just qualified to play in the U.S. Open championship later this month. Mason Howell, who is currently a junior at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, clinched his ticket to Oakmont after making 18 birdies and carding back-to-back rounds of 63 on Monday. Oh, it was a roller coaster all day. I mean, I'd be lying if I didn't say I was nervous, but just hugging my mom and my dad, walking off 18 green is just a feeling that I don't know if I'll feel again, but that was one of the greatest moments of my life. Howell first picked up a golf club at age three and has played in tournaments since he was six years old. His father, Rob, has been by his side every step of the way. My biggest mentor, biggest fan, I have him by my side the whole way. It's a great feeling. With a current ranking of eighth in the Boys American Junior Golf Association, you probably could have guessed that Mason has already committed to play golf in college. He plans to join the Georgia Bulldogs golf team in the fall of 2026. But long before then, you can find Mason on the fairways of Oakmont Country Club for the U.S. Open. It'll be a week I won't forget, and I'm really looking forward to it and gonna go see what I can do.
