A few years ago, the National Golf Course Owners Association published an article called Beware of Barter. It laid out a big problem. Instead of paying cash to be on teatime marketplaces like Golf Now, most courses trade a few of their teatimes each day instead. These are referred to as trade times or barter in the industry. Golf Now then sells those teatimes and keeps most or all of the revenue. Golfers will recognize these teatimes as hot deals, essentially a daily fire sale where these teatimes are aggressively discounted until they're sold. It's nearly impossible for course operators to calculate what this actually costs them, but the opportunity cost is massive. They're giving up valuable teatimes every day, losing pricing control, and undermining their own rate integrity. Courses are finally catching on and leaving the platform in droves.
