Call me crazy, but in my mind, AI is technology. The idea of needing a CAIO is a little unnecessary. Isn't that kind of what the CTO is for? And according to AWS, apparently 60% of organizations globally have appointed dedicated AI executives, such as the chief AI officer. I decided to start reading a book that's meant to be a playbook for leaders who want to build AI-first companies, because if I'm going to talk so much shit about the approach, I should probably understand it deeper. There was a whole section centered around whether you should have a chief AI officer or not. In the defense of the author of this book, they said it depends on the organization and not to get too enamored with someone who only knows AI and doesn't understand your business. This goes back to my entire issue with the idea of an AI-first strategy. Unless you're a tech company that is building AI solutions, I just don't get the point of a chief AI officer. You have a big issue if your CTO isn't well-versed enough in AI to be able to help you with that strategy. Spend the time educating the people that are already within your company and learning how to partner with the right people to bring the technology in. How is this any different than any other tool we've seen? There wasn't a chief workflow officer or a chief process mining officer. Instead of putting AI first, put your people first, invest in education, invest in digital literacy, and give them the tools that they need to be the right people to bring the technology in for you.
