This customer drove over an hour to get here after she saw one of my videos and figured I might be the only one crazy enough to pull this off. The job? A David Yerman ring. Solid silver and gold, and built like a tank. She wanted to wear it on her middle finger, which meant it needed to go up three and a half sizes. Now, that might sound simple, but this thing has five rows of twisted cables running through the shank, and that's where it gets a bit tricky. Most jewelers would either pass on the job, or they'd cut it, fill the gap with smooth silver, and pretend like the cables never even existed. But if you've seen my work, you know that's not how I do things. Soldering's just the beginning for me. I followed the gaps in between the rows and cut out four lines across the piece with a separating disc. The individual strands were the hardest part. For this, I used a quarter millimeter ball bur, about the size of a grain of sand. I think I wore through three of them in the two hours it took just to carve out the middle section. All that effort just to make it look like I wasn't even there. But this just might be some of my cleanest work ever. She didn't want the band re-oxidized, said she liked it bright and shiny. So I gave it a final buff, dissolved away the polishing compound, and admired my work for one last time. Now she can proudly flash that middle finger to all her friends. You know, just to show off the ring.
