Claude desktop versus Claude code in your terminal. What is the difference? Let me show you the differences between them and what each one can do that the other can't. So you know exactly when to use either one. All right, let's start with how they're the same. They both run on the exact same engine. They're the same AI models, the same configuration files in the same project memory. They use the same MCP servers and skills, and you can actually run both of these at the same time on the same project. They share everything underneath the hood. So the question should not be which one is smarter because they're identical. There. The question is, is which interface gives you the features that you need? Right? So the desktop version pulls ahead in some ways that people don't realize it obviously has the three different modes. This makes it really easy to jump back and forth to the chat feature, the cohort feature and the code feature to utilize all three of its capabilities. Chat's obviously your standard convention of brainstorming ideas and just chatting with the model. Cowork here might be helpful because it can run some background agents and then cloud code is going to be your fully autonomous coding agent. Most of the difference are going to be visual where you can click on lines, leave comments. You get a live app preview with an embedded browser within the desktop version. You can actually schedule tasks a bit more robustly than you can with cloud code and you can get remote cloud sessions that keep running even if you close your laptop, which is unavailable in the terminal, but the CLI version or cloud code in the terminal has some things that desktop cannot do. The main thing here is it can access things that cloud desktop cannot. If you need any third party AI providers like AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex or Azure, you're only going to get that in the CLI version. The CLI version also allows you to run multiple agent teams on different parts of the project at once and if you are on a Linux, the desktop version is not available to you at all. So overall, what are the key differences between these two desktop you can think of as a visual command center. It's where you want to go if you want to see what is going on, what's happening. You can review changes visually. You can manage multiple tasks in your sidebar at once and you can let it run overnight using the cloud feature. The CLI you can think of as like an automation backbone. It's where you go when you want to script things and incorporate cloud code into your pipelines, but also let you use these third party providers or orchestrate multiple agents. There are not huge differences between these two unless you need it for very specific things at this point in time. And I imagine over time, these differences will continue to shrink less and less.
