I have ALWAYS struggled with setting my wrists ...
If you have a hard time hinging in your swing, this video is for you. So a good rule of thumb is when your arm is parallel with the ground, your club and arm should make a 90 degree angle just like Adam Scott is here. And this is obviously something that I struggle with because I have an obtuse angle here. When you don't set your wrist on the backswing, you will likely get really steep on the downswing and then you'll try and save it by early extending. Whipping the club to the inside is bad bad bad, but here's what I change. This is my new feel on my takeaway. Thumbs go up while I'm turning. Notice how when my thumbs go up, I create this 90 degree angle on the backswing. So my new trigger to start my swing is thumbs go up, but you have to do it while you're rotating or else it's just going to look crazy. So if I just turn my body, that's what it would look like. And if I just did the thumb hinge, that's what it would look like. So I have to combine them and then you get a really good takeaway. Okay, I'm just going to play some swings right here and watch how the club head is ahead of my hands and it never gets whipped inside. It's just, it's so much better. This little swing change completely fixed my hinge issue. Oh, I'm so happy, holy cow.
