Evan Spiegel on how the brain actually relaxes ...
Well, one of the things that really struck me, a couple of years ago, I went to Mayo Clinic. You do the executive checkup. They're like, okay, do you want to talk to somebody about mental health? Or I'm like, great, I'll talk to somebody about mental health and stress and this kind of thing. And they were like, did you know how the brain relaxes? I said, no, I have no idea how the brain relaxes. They said, if you do a focused activity. I was like, really? They're like, yeah, everybody thinks if you go to the beach and lie down to relax, actually your brain gets more stressed out because it's all over the place, thinking about all these sorts of different things. They're like, your brain is in its most relaxed state when you're focused on something. And that's actually how your brain decompresses. I was like, that makes so much sense because the way that I've relaxed is learning how to become a helicopter pilot. I'm a big rebreather diver. I love to do these things that are challenging, require a huge amount of focus. And they've always helped me relax. And I can never put it together until apparently the science really reinforces when you have to focus on an activity like flying a helicopter, that's when your brain actually calms down.
