While I'm doing all my research for my videos, I come across some crazy websites that are just out there for us to use. But this might be one of the coolest and trippiest. It's called shipmap.org and it's a compilation of all of the shipping data from the year of 2012 and it's animated. Even though the vast majority of us never have to think about tanker ships or shipping in general, shipping runs our lives and basically everything we use, consume, it all travels on ships. Looking around at the patterns, the routes, etc, you can notice a lot of cool things. Like why Singapore is such an important and diverse city. Or like how absolutely railed the global economy would be if Egypt were to shut down the Suez Canal. Is that like a little oil field right there? Like why are no ships going through that? Or you can look at the shipping that goes around the bottom of Africa. Routes that were established before the Suez Canal, which is why South Africa and Cape Town is a thing. Just imagine if you had to add all of this shipping traffic into it. It's worth mentioning that red is oil tankers. Or like check out the cool patterns that the various islands of different importances make in the Pacific Ocean here. And like what is this? I think light blue is like shallower. So I think we're seeing the old extinct Hawaiian islands. Or like check out the oil production in the Gulf of Mexico and how important the Panama Canal is. Or you can notice what color dominates the South China Sea. Yellow is container ships. No oil coming out of here because all their oil is trading with Russia for the most part. But a lot of goods traveling on these container ships. Or there's just other little details like why Istanbul is such an important city. Because it's the one inlet to all of this trade and all of this red oil shipping coming down out of Russia.
