These are five more things that I don't let my kids do because I'm a pediatrician. This is part two. Please check out my first part of my series. Part one, I do promise this time to be much more precise with how I count. It was a problem in the last video. So number one, I do not let my children and won't advise my patients to start playing full contact football until at least age 12. There is an abundance of science about long-term brain health and outcomes that it decreases the cumulative, what they call non-concussive exposure during critical periods of neurodevelopment. So no tackle football before age 12. Number two, I do not let my kids and don't let my grandchildren ride in the front seat of my car until they are at least 13 years old. There is, again, a large amount of retrospective and clinical evidence that the risk of airbag-related severe injury and death significantly goes down after age 13, regardless of height or weight. Number three, I don't let my kids get a lecture on behaviors that I myself am not already trying to model or I'm not prepared to model, whether that's phone use, whether that's kindness, whether that's speaking with respect to them or other people, whether that's prioritizing sleep, diet and exercise. If I'm not prepared to model it, my kids aren't gonna get a lecture about it. Number four, I don't let my kids think that mistakes and setbacks are anything except a normal part of growth and improving and growing up and being the best version of yourself. Normalizing mistakes to your children. Once again, that's modeling that behavior. And number five, I don't let my children think that mental health means that you're supposed to feel good every day. Mental health, and I get this from Lisa Damore, who is an amazing adolescent and child psychologist who should follow her content, but mental health isn't that you feel good every day. That's not normal or expected. Mental health is that your feelings have context and make sense.
