That is a great question. Right when you think this board couldn't get any more perfect, yes, the trays slide completely out. So after you're done sorting your puzzle pieces, you can take the tray fully out and then tuck them right back in very easily. And once you have your sorted pieces all tucked away, you cover the rest of it up with your mat so your progress doesn't get disturbed overnight. If you have pets or toddlers, that might get into that. And then we go to the universal spot and store under our couch.
